The Roman Games
05:28
|
|||
8pm on a wednesday night
They sit and sample the strange delight
Of the battleground, the tabloid hell
Where fame's fickle guillotine fell
They watch the lions and tigers fight
In the bloodied sand between courage and fright
And they make the least of what remains
All victims of the Roman Games
Thumbs raised or lowered in submarine salute
The illusion of choice in a bronze armour suit
Holy empire projection's might
Stare at the spectacle all day and night
The combatants flicker, sharptoothed and suntanned
And fight to the death in the bloody wonderland
The spectators are all too real
Their eyes glaze over to the Roman Games
Nero sits on his sofa of stone
Wearing his eyes right down to the bone
Intangible women sprawl at his feet
Gestures alluring and all conceit
He'll never be but what he's got
And time will tell if he makes it or not
Find out next week on the show that never ends
The bloody circus, the Roman Games

Dark Corners
02:54
|
|||
as i walked down my winter's road
the wind was blowing mighty cold
there was nothing in the hedgerow
nothing in the lane
still i kept my fingers drawn
in the pockets of my coat
and I drew my scarf around my neck
to keep me from the cold
there's no mystery anymore
the dark corners of the world
have been lit
and rounded off
i passed by a factory
belching bitter steel
and I glimpsed up at the window
a beast stood at the wheel
oh he snorted when he saw me
and vanished in the smoke
the snake-pipes of industry
perpetuate the joke
there's no mystery anymore
the dark corners of the world
have been lit
and rounded off
i bought a paper from a roadside stand
and read it in the park
dracula was in the lonely hearts
the yeti's been arrested
the loch ness monster's scandalised
embezzling public charity funds
his reputation's ruined and
his wife's run off with the milkman
there's no mystery anymore
the dark corners of the world
have been lit
and rounded off

Alone on a Mountaintop
04:04
|
|||
I wish I was
Alone on a mountaintop
Oh I wish I was
Alone on a mountaintop
The world's too frenzied
Never gives me time to stop
I'd shout at the forest
'What is the meaning of the void'?
Shout at the forest
'What is the meaning of the void'?
If the forest couldn't answer
Perfect silence is employed
And all the insects
and the man in the moon
All the insects
and the man in the moon
spin madly around like
a windmill by the sea
I've got to keep my head clear
and the skies will be too
Got to keep my head clear
and the skies will be too
If storm clouds gather
It'll be all the worse for you

The Waterboatman
08:47
|
|||
If you go near the river today
To meet a friend or a lover
You'd better watch your tongue
and keep your secrets guarded
For eavesdropping amongst the reeds
The water boatman sits
hes's been seen on the shoulder of kings
listening in
A fly on the wall
Of a river of conversation.
where power and intrigue writhe and seethe
the water boatman flits

Land's End
08:34
|
|||
You and I have travelled here
from a green and pleasant land
across potholes and plotholes and fallow fields
With the future snapping at our heels
a brass band balance on the crest of a wave
polished gold flash serenade
but they're not playing our song
'cause they've never heard it sung.
the dragonflies grow old in the everday
tie a reef knot and venture out to sea
they sing a winding, willowing song
of the end of all roads - land's end
Venus and Mars have lost their minds
In the ragged night and time's all-weaving wave
stole away our hopeless dream
as we pawned our fates to the stars above
a steam powered donkey crashes into the sea
the gears within howl and spin
daring to unknow you or me
Another adventure begins.
the dragonflies grow old in the everday
tie a reef knot and venture out to sea
they sing a winding, willowing song
of the end of all roads - land's end

A bluebottle whirs through a cavernous room
Antigravity ashtray all in gloom
Dazed and confused helicopter
Through the void you tumble
Oh, little fly, where will you go?
The world is small and getting smaller still
Are you not the same as I?
And am I not the same as you?
For I stumble through the days
As something greater far-off plays
A butterfly sings in a book by my bed
That I've not had time to read
He's looking for Juliet but
She doesn't need him anymore
She's in the one place he can't look
A different world in another book.

Spirit Level Swansea, UK
Swansea- based blues folk rock band Spirit Level played together from 2011 - 2013, though most of the members had been playing together for much longer as a loose improvisation/noise/metal/video game music band. After two albums, guitarist and songwriter John Mear left to concentrate on his other material. The other members of the band continued on in a more progressive style as News From Nowhere. ... more
